With an instrument of cruelty We symbolize our Lord; With crosses of mahogany, The best we can afford. Bring in gold and silver, Raise the crosses high! A piece of wood never looked so good; We fall in love with the symbol of Another way to die. What if the Jews had chosen Another way to kill Besides those famous crosses They put up on the hill? Our symbol might be different, And wouldn't it be odd; A noose and a rope on the robe of the Pope; What would it mean if the guillotine Were to represent our God? On the belfries of the churches, On the jewelry that is sold We find this way of dying Immortalized in gold. And, hanging in the chapel, It's towering above; Taking its place with the silver and lace, A shrine we build of the way they killed A living God of love.
